I think I might’ve said it before, but the absolute worst thing about Dumbing Of Age is that Willis takes actually well-written characters and turns them into incompetent stereotypical forms of their original selves in the name of “comedy” (read: drama).

See, while Willis’ comics have become something of a common feature here for their idiotic plots, horrible attempts at jokes, and pointless lesbian drama, there was a time when he could actually write! Really well, too (or, at least as I remember it, it was 10 years ago)! And Walky and Joyce (Pictured) were unanimously considered the best characters he had ever written, to the point that his third comic was nothing but them!

Which is why it really, really sucks that Willis has gone “Oh yeah, likeable characters? I’m having none of that. Let’s drop her IQ a point, or eighty”. What was once the only deeply religious non-comedic character in webcomics is now the butt of every “Stupid things religious people do” joke Willis can think of. Where she used to have a naive and childish view on relationships, now she can’t even comprehend that bad things can happen in them. And the whole “OMG my boyfriend talked to another girl WHAT A DISASTER” thing? That actually originates from his first comic, Roomies, where she was the crazy obsessive stalker girl… that was completely dropped from her character because of how stupid it was! Who the hell looks back at the first comic, thinks “Hmm, this looks like a great idea with lots of comedic potential. Why did I decide it was stupid? Musta been an accident!”

Basically, just like feminists who become community managers of kickstarter games and try to turn established characters into gingers, Dumbing Of Age pisses all over Willis’ good comics by Flanderizing its characters worse than the Simpsons could ever hope to.

Oh, and they had a poll on the best character in DOA. Dina won with 50% of all votes. Dina is the ultra-autistic character that rarely appears and doesn’t do anything but talk about dinosaurs. I think that says volumes. The only thing that makes that even dumber is that her original character was just a mild-mannered palaeontologist.

Odds are good Willis is exploiting the current era’s penchant for wasting money on bullshit that panders to them. So he’ll make “lol religious people” and other shit ass jokes because those people who like those jokes shove money in his face.

What I’m saying is that Willis is a sell-out
